Home-based physical therapy is ideal for someone who has difficulty leaving his/her home due to mobility impairments, deconditioning, impaired immune system function, and various other reasons that make leaving home difficult. We specialize in home safety evaluations, equipment recommendations, fall prevention, improving endurance/activity tolerance, and restorative exercise.

Home-Based Personal Training

Home gyms are becoming more popular, and you don’t need a lot of equipment to get a good workout! I meet the needs of my clients by using their equipment and by bringing some of my own if needed. I love helping my clients have fun and successful workouts in the comfort of their own home.

Gym-Based Personal Training

If you feel more motivated exercising outside of your home, I offer personal training sessions at my gym space. I am well equip with traditional gym equipment., and I also have specialized physical therapy equipment ideal for those who need a nice blend of both personal training and physical therapy.

About Sarah & Lee

Sarah Spencer, Maine Fitness Trainer
Lee Spencer, Maine Fitness Trainer

I received my Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology from Dickinson College where I also competed as a Div III heptathlete. After several injuries and time spent in physical therapy, I decided to pursue a career as a Physical Therapist. I received my clinical doctorate (DPT) from the University of New England in 2012. My clinical experience includes treating orthopedic, neurological, and cardiovascular conditions. I have worked with a wide range of patients from early teens to advanced elderly. In conjunction with physical therapy, I also work as a personal trainer and love blending the two professions.

One of my most favorite ways to serve my community is by teaching boxing to people with Parkinson’s Disease. I created Midcoast Functional Training as a response to the changing health care system. I saw a need for quality, at home care in my community. From there, my idea grew to include personal training for people looking to improve their functional health and physical fitness. I offer a unique spin on the typical personal training experience because of my expertise and experience as a physical therapist. My personal training clients often come to me with a history of injury or chronic illness that needs to be closely monitored. I am able to safely guide them through prescribed exercises to meet their fitness goals, improve their quality of life, and prevent re-injury.

I graduated from the University of New England with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I took a non-traditional way to get there though. I graduated from Hendrix College and Washington University in St Louis with degrees in physics and electrical engineering. I then spent 6 years in the United States Air Force as an engineer and analyst before returning to school for physical therapy.

All of my physical therapy experience has been in the orthopedic, outpatient setting. I have treated joint replacements, pre and post op patients, sports injuries, strains, sprains, fractures, overuse injuries as well as various joint and muscle pains. As a runner myself, I have a particular interest in treating, training and educating runners. I did my first running race at the age of 12 and have been running and racing ever since. I have over 30 years of experience of training as well as racing and over 12 years of experience of rehabbing, training and educating runners. I am also a Certified Run Coach through the International Sports Sciences Association.

Originally from Oklahoma, I now reside in Brunswick with my wife, Sarah, and son, Levi. We enjoy an active and outdoors lifestyle, including running, biking, camping, hiking, skiing and snowboarding.

We are currently an out of network provider which means that we do not accept insurance directly. We can, however, provide you with documentation so you can submit claims directly to your insurance company.
